A Meme-orable Lesson in Israel Advocacy

Sunday, March 16, 2014 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM

“First world problems.” “Condescending Wonka.” “Prepare yourselves - winter is coming.” These are the catch-phrases of some of the most viral memes, better known as those irreverent, witty pictures and text that show up in our social media feeds. And while they're sometimes intended to poke fun at pop culture, current events and ourselves, they can also be used to share serious information. Visuals and graphics are now one of the leading ways to speak to online audiences, proving this tool is much more than just a laughing matter.

In fact, they can even be used to discuss something as complex as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which the Israel Action Network demonstrated during Operation: Pillar of Defense in November 2012. Learn firsthand how IAN used memes to educate and inspire action within their social media spheres by combining compelling imagery with popular meme themes to lead the conversation on Israel in a positive, productive direction. This session will guide participants through many different kinds of memes, how they can easily be leveraged within the Jewish community, and how to make your own! We’ll create our own on-the-spot Tribefest memes, which participants can upload immediately. “Prepare yourselves”…the Tribefest memes are coming!
